1st Date

Our First date...

For our first date, Josh took me to his work party at Memorial Grove Park in SLC.

We decorated ginger bread cookies, ate yummy food and exchanged white elephant gifts.

After the party Josh had the idea to jump the fence to the SLC Library and take artistic pictures.

Josh's creativity made our first date memorable and fun.

This is Josh. From my perspective, I was just so happy to finally be on a date with Katie.... this most impressive, beautiful and amazing first grade teacher from Idaho who I had known for so many years, but had never been out with on a date. Katie was very poised, as she is, but still a lot of fun, which I liked. She seemed very simple and tasteful. It was clear at the end of that first date that Katie brought consistency and refinement to my otherwise unpredictable and unpolished personality. I liked her sense of propriety and decency. Throughout the activities of the evening, it was fun to witness how she cautiously, reluctantly and / or hesitatingly embraced our differences of personality, and it seemed clear that she would really complimented our relationship with a lot of the strengths I didn't inherently posses. I was constantly looking over at her throughout the night and thinking to myself, "She is sooooo stunning!" In a nutshell, I found myself falling for her.... hook, line and sinker.... lock, stock and barrel.... BAMM! I was in!

The main reason Katie and I had never dated prior to this night of nights (at least from my perspective) is simply that either my friends were going out with Katie, or I was in a serious dating relationship with someone... so it came down to a simple availability / timing dis-connect. I first met Katie because one of my closest friends, Brad Hagen, had called me up to ask if I would be his "Wing Man" when he went to ask Katie out on their first date. Ironically, Brad ended up marrying Katie... but it was a different Katie. :)

Katie and I were acquaintances as a result of Brad Hagen asking her out, but another close friend and business partner of mine at the time, Ryan Caldwell, saw Katie at a house party we held while both Brad and I were living with Ryan at the Oakcliff house. Katie expressed interest in Ryan when I stopped by her apt after the party to ask her out on a date before Ryan did, so rather than spoil Ryan's chances of going out with a girl who had interest in him, I actually helped set them up on a date by talking Ryan up to Katie and orchestrating a double date that I went on with them. Ryan and Katie went out a few times, but that relationship went nowhere. Meanwhile, the girl I took out on that double date with Ryan and Katie became my girlfriend, who I dated all of 2008.
Funny how it is all about timing and choices.

In the winter of 2010, my cousin Amber Middleton reminded me of Katie, because Katie was in her ward. It was not always like this, but at the time, I was at a decision point in my courting relationships with two other amazing girls who I knew well and had started dating. During one of the times that I was over at Amber's house, Katie showed up with some other friends from Amber's ward.
